Guides & Tips

prairie

Prairies are dynamic ecosystems with no two prairies exactly alike and with no single prairie being the same from year to year.  Each prairie is constantly changing.

Prairie types (segments) are classified according to the amount of moisture in the soil.

The Five Prairie Segments

  1. Wet Prairie (has more water than rainfall.... water runs on). Common to East and South;
  2. Wet - Mesic Prairie
  3. Mesic Prairie (water soaks in .... no runoff or runon)
  4. Mesic - Dry Prairie
  5. Dry Prairie (less water than rainfall .... water runs off)

Timely burning can be beneficial in helping to control weeds and stimulate your prairie planting. Prairies should be burned every 3 to 5 years to stimulate growth and eliminate excessive buildup of plant material.
