Little Bluestem grew in 45 of the United States and was the most abundant grass in mid-America. This native grass forms erect clumps usually less than one foot across. Its stems and leaf blades are purplish to bluish green, turning coppery red at maturity. The plant is attractive during the growing season but also develops good fall color, ranging from bronze to intense orange. The inflorescence has small
fuzzy seeds with twisted awns. The seeds are partially enclosed in
the leaf sheath. |

Little Bluestem is a good intermediate grass that will not overshadow prairie flowers as with dense plantings of the taller grasses. It works well in landscape plantings and is excellent for erosion control. Hay forage is excellent for cattle. |
