A native of the Great Plains, Side Oats Grama is very adaptable and able to withstand extremes of difficult conditions. Like other grama grasses, it has oat-like seeds that hang downward in two rows in the stem axis. The leaves are rough on the upper side and hairy on the underside. The ligule is also hairy. Side Oats Grama is a sod-forming grass; it has good seedling vigor and can withstand long draught periods when not heavily grazed.

Side Oats Grama grows in dry, well-drained, moderately calcareous soils. It requires full to partial sun. |

Side Oats Grama is a good forage plant. It is valuable for erosion control and is highly ornamental especially when mixed with Little Bluestem and smaller weaker prairie flowers. I like to include it in mixed prairie plantings as it is one of the first plants to show itself in the spring. |
