Canada Wild Rye is a clumping grass.  Its seed head resembles wheat or barley and droops or nods when mature.  The spiked seed head has long awns on the seed.  The leaf blades are wide.

Canada Wild Rye grows in lowland to upland prairies.
It is adaptable to a wide variety of soil types and moisture regimes.

It requires full to partial sun.

Protective Cover: Poor
Food: Excellent.  Both the foliage and seeds are used by more than 30 species of birds and mammals.

FYI image Canada Wild Rye is a good forage grass.  It establishes fast and holds the soil while not out-competing the other native grasses.  It is a short-lived perennial, a decreaser in mixed stands, and a good ornamental plant for landscaping.
