Sorghastrum nutans: Indian Grass |
![]() |
A dominant native to the Tallgrass prairie, Indian Grass forms tall narrow clumps. In summer its leaves are light green or blue but become bronze or burnt orange in the fall making its large, golden, plumelike panicle inflorescence attractive both on the prairie and in dried floral arrangements as well. The leaf blades are wide and lengthy with a long ligule that resembles a rifle sight. |

It is attractive when used in ornamental landscape plantings and in dried floral arrangements. Indian grass is a nutritional, palatable forage for livestock and produces high yields. Indian grass makes excellent hay. Indian grass is Daryl's favorite of the tall prairie grasses. |
Indian grass is often found mixed with bluestems in upland to moist prairies. While it prefers deep, well-drained soil, it will tolerate clay soils. It requires full sun. |
