Sand Dropseed is not as stunning in appearance as is its cousin Prairie Dropseed. It has erect or spreading stems with the final open panicle mostly included in the sheath.  The panicle is lead to purplish colored.

Season of Growth: Warm (mid-June - Sept)
Life Cycle: Perennial
Propagation: Easily from Seed
 

Sand Dropseed grows in calcareous soils in dry, upland prairies.

It requires full sun.
 

Wildlife Value

Nesting: Fair
Protective Cover: Fair, important in areas where other grasses have been depleted
Food: Good, although the seeds are small, they are used by a wide range of birds and mammals.  It is fair as forage for livestock.
