The Savory Leaf Aster, or the stiff-leaved or bristly aster, looks like a small evergreen, forming distinct rounded clumps of stiff, deep green glossy foliage.

Each of the numerous flower heads is approximately an inch wide with blue-violet rays and yellow disks.  The leaves of the Savory Leaf Aster are small and stiff, tapering to sharp points and will break rather than bend with folded.

It makes an attractive cut flower.

Savory Leaf Aster grows in dry sandy or rock prairies.  It is also locally common in open upland savannas and is found throughout much of the eastern tallgrass prairie region.  It requires full to partial sun.

It is best propagated from seed.
