Baptisia leucophaea: |
|
Cream Wild Indigo is Daryl's favorite prairie plant. It is a bushy perennial with spreading branched stems. The flower heads consist of drooping, dense racemes of large, yellow pea-like flowers that seem to almost flow to the ground. The legume pods are ovoid and terminate in a beak. Foliage turns dark after a frost. Root systems of this plant can extend up to 20 feet.

| Cream Wild Indigo grows in dry
to mesic prairie and requires full sun. It is easily propagated from scarified seed, but will not normally bloom until the fourth or fifth year. Nevertheless, it is well worth the wait! |
|
Native Americans used a decoction of the leaves of this plant as a stimulant and as an application to cuts and wounds. An infusion made from the roots was also used as a remedy for typhoid and scarlet fever. Leaves of this plant yield an indigo blue dye if steeped in water and allowed to ferment. |
