Native to the eastern US, Shooting Star is a lovely plant with a leafless stem 8-12 inches tall.
The flat spoon-shaped leaves grow in a rosette at the base of the plant.
The 5 petals flare back and the conspicuous, reddish tips of the stamens
form a tight cone, which points downward.
Once Shooting Star has bloomed, the basal leaves are reabsorbed and disappear. In gardens, the location must be labeled as the entire plant often disappears and is invisible. |

| Shooting Star grows in dry to wet prairie
and requires full sun. It can be
propagated from seed or from division. If started from seed,
the plant normally will not bloom until the fourth or fifth year. |
