 Similar to Eupatorium purpureum (Joe Pye Weed) but smaller, Lesser Joe Pye Weed is common in the northern tallgrass prairie region.

Its numerous flower heads develop as flat to shallowly rounded clusters near the top of the plant's branches. Its green stems are speckled or blotched with purple.

It is showy in large stands, but very aggressive.

Lesser Joe Pye Weed grows in damp meadows, open marshy areas, and moist ditches along roadsides.  It requires full sun.

It is easily propagated from seed or root division in spring.
