Native to eastern North American, Wild Geranium, also called Cranesbill, is a common
wildflower. The 3-5 inch deeply lobed leaves are long -stemmed if originating at
the base of the plant and short-stemmed and opposite if originating higher
up on the main stem.
It has 5-petaled rose-purple colored flowers 1 - 1½ inches wide. Wild Geranium is also called Cranesbill because of its long, beaked fruit. Seeds are released when the lower portion of each fruit segment splits and coils toward the tip of the beak. |

Native Americans and early settlers are said to have used the thick, horizontal root of the Wild Geranium to treat canker sores. Native Americans also used it as an astringent to stop bleeding in open wounds. This herb is high in tannin. |
