Compass Plant is a classic prairie plant. It resembles a sunflower
with its yellow blossoms. It has large basal, deeply lobed leaves
and smaller clasping leaves further up the stem. The leaves face north and
south, hence the name Compass Plant. Its taproot can reach a depth of 15 feet or more with a diameter as large as a man's arm. Compass Plant is not often found in areas that have been heavily grazed since it is a favorite of grazing animals who will seek it out and devour it.

| Compass Plant grows in dry
mesic to wet mesic prairie and requires full sun. It is easily propagated from seed but will not bloom for three to five years. Root division is difficult because of the massive size of the root. |
|
Native American children used the resinous exudates of Compass Plant as chewing gum. |
