Bur-reed needs shallow water
areas where water persists until at least June. It has linear iris-like leaves that are triangular in cross-section. Its flowers are unisexual, with staminate and pistillate flowers in whitish, dense round heads on the flower stems. The smaller, upper heads are staminate, and the larger, lower heads are pistillate. The fruit is a round, bristly head of stout-beaked achenes.
